EVERY MEN'S SKIN CARE PRODUCT AND HOW OFTEN TO USE THEM

A guide to the different men’s grooming products, what they do & how often to use them.

Our Master Barbers and Skin Care Experts get inquiries all the time from guests asking, “Do I need to use this?” or, “Is this stuff any good?” But, one query we’re hearing more and more recently is, “How often should I use this product?” A simple question indeed, but tricky and complicated enough that we decided to break it down a bit.

Cleanser

Grooming Lounge Mug Cleaner Face Wash

Why: Targeted facial cleansers are necessary to remove dirt and oil and gentle enough to keep faces fresh and healthy. The centerpiece of any gent’s grooming routine.

How often: 2 times daily, once in the morning and evening, or as needed if after exercise.

Grooming Importance: 5

GL TIP Don’t use the same bar soap on the face that just cleaned that nether-region.

Moisturizer

Why: Money makers need hydration and moisturizers also fend off fine lines, wrinkles and redness from shaving. They ensure skin is not creating excess oils to compensate for lack of moisture.

How often: 1-2 times daily. Apply once in the morning after a cleanser and reapply when feeling dry and before bed.

Grooming Importance: 5

GL TIP If prone to oily skin, use an oil control lotion as a moisturizer to hydrate and give skin a matte finish.

Shampoo

Why: Shampoos make sure any dirt and excess oils are removed from the hair. A good shampoo will cleanse and nourish the scalp and protect hair from the daily grind.

How often: 1 time per day, but it doesn’t hurt to take a day off from time to time.

Grooming Importance: 5

GL TIP Taking a one-day break from shampooing isn’t the worst thing if your hair didn’t get particularly dirty or sweaty that day.

Conditioner

Why: Conditioners hydrate thirsty hair and return natural oils to moisturize and keep locks from becoming brittle. They fight dandruff and make hair softer, smoother and easier to style.

How often: 1 time per day directly after shampooing. From time-to-time, taking a conditioning break won’t hurt.

Grooming Importance: 4

GL TIP Leave conditioner in hair for about 1-2 minutes before rinsing out to make sure locks are lusciously soft afterward.

Scrubs

Why: Exfoliating skin is necessary to deep cleanse and reveal a healthier, more youthful appearance. Moreover, they dig deep into pores to unclog any excess dirt, oils or debris hiding under the surface. On the shaving front, scrubs are essential for uprooting ingrown hairs and avoiding razor bumps.

How often: 1-2 times per week, depending on oiliness of skin. If used too often, skin can become irritated, dry and/or tight.

Grooming Importance: 4

GL TIP Not all scrubs are created equal. Some are soft, some are tough. Find the right one for your skin.

Toner

Anthony Purifying Astringent Pads

Why: Toners improve skin complexion, get rid of grime missed by cleansers, tighten up skin and aid moisturizers in penetration.

How often: 1-2 times per day after cleansing and before moisturizing.

Grooming Importance: 2

GL TIP For a toner quickie, grab some handy toner pads and save some time.

Sunscreen

Why: Sunscreens protect against harmful UV rays and help prevent wrinkles, sun spots and scarring. Anything below SPF 15 ain’t going to cut it.

How often: Apply 1 time in the AM, reapply every 1-2 hours or as needed.

Grooming Importance: 4

GL TIP Grab a moisturizer with SPF to tighten up any grooming routine.

Masks

Why: Masks help suck up and tame oil, shrink/unclog pores and improve moisture and circulation levels. While most dry out, a few moisturize/refresh the mug.

How often: Apply 1-2 times per week and let sit on the face for 10-20 minutes.

Grooming Importance: 2

GL TIP Always make sure to moisturize afterward to restore the skin’s pH balance & hydration.

Eye Creams

Why: Eye creams are targeted moisturizers intent on reducing and eliminating puffiness, fine lines and dark circles.

How often: Typically 1-2 times daily, in the morning and evening. These are applied by gently tapping into the skin under the eyes with the ring or pinky fingers.

Grooming Importance: 3

GL TIP Persistence is key as results will not show up overnight. Make it part of the routine and stick with it.
