The Regular Guy's Guide To Instagram

Whether you're for it or against it, active on it or "dark" -- there's no argument that social media is an important and necessary tool for building and maintaining relationships nowadays. In order to make the most of your social accounts (if they exist), we turned to Instagram Strategist, Ryan Magin, for his expert insight on getting the most out of Instagram -- the the fastest-growing platform around.   Here's what Ryan (who really knows his stuff), had to say about improving your Insta for better personal and professional results.

Instagram is a 24/365 resume that can either work for or against you. So, without hiring a professional photographer or posting daily pictures of your rear end, here's three tips to immediately up your game on the Gram...

Utilize The Paparazzi Effect

Stop taking selfies. Right now. When I'm working with clients and brands, the first thing I tell them is they need to up their "celebrity factor." What I mean by this is that you rarely see a celebrity posting selfies -- it's always a photographer or fan or such. To integrate this into your life and give your profile a boost of appeal and authority, toss your phone to a friend, wife, girlfriend or complete stranger and ask them to take a pic. Although this seems weird, it's actually becoming more and more common with the popularity of Instagram and makes it appear as if you're not not a solo act. And, the pictures usually turn out better too.

Build Your Authority

Regardless of your profession or goals, utilizing photos showcasing you teaching, public speaking or sharing your experiences and expertise will give you a greater sense of authority to the public. This will elevate the status of your profile and make you more attractive to potential employers, coworkers and other humans. Who knows... this may lead to a new career opportunity you may never have considered or had a shot at previously.

Showcase Your Best Self

Instagram is a great place to share photos that make you unique. If you're not already, start showcasing the aspects of your personality that make you unique: hobbies, interests and adventures. This will not only make your profile more interesting, but it will also make for a great conversation starter when meeting new people.

The point is, you should care about what you are posting online. It has the potential to either work for you or against you. The choice is yours, but I always prefer when things work out for me.
