All About Acqua Di Parma Cologne

Acqua Di Parma is one of the most prestigious and revered brands in men’s grooming today – and yesterday. After nearly a century of crafting some of the world’s finest colognes and ointments, you could say the folks at ADP have a good understanding of what it takes to help make men smell, look & feel great. Read on to discover what makes the Italian brand’s products the crème de la crème of the grooming world.

It all started with the original Colonia Cologne, which was created by a small perfumer in the city of Parma, Italy in 1916. At the time, it was wildly different from any other fragrance available. It became an Italian tradition until roughly the 1950’s, when visiting American celebrities began to take it home and make it their own (a gent named Cary Grant was particularly fond of it).

Not long after the initial success of Colonia Cologne, Acqua Di Parma introduced a wide variety of products using the classic Colonia scent as their base – solutions from shampoo and conditioner to talcum powder. And the company’s renowned Collezione Barbiere shaving line cannot be overlooked. For years, it used the same scent as the classic Colonia, but was recently altered to be fragrance-free to better suit men of all skin types. The shaving cream tub, a Grooming Lounge Handsome Award Winner, is simply one of the best, creating an amazing lather and housed in a tub that seemingly lasts for eons.

After 100 years in business, the brand has retained prestige through tradition, only using the purest ingredients and meticulously hand-labeling every famous yellow box. Acqua Di Parma colognes are a must-have for any guy who wants to feel like they’ve made it.

All of the Colonia scents scream luxury (albeit in a very dignified way), but each has a different aspect that makes it unique. Here’s a breakdown of the fragrances and what your nose might notice.

The original formula, unchanged since 1916. A classic blend of Mediterranean Citrus and Herbal notes like Rosemary and Lavender with an undercurrent of Vetiver and Sandalwood make up this olfactory unisex masterpiece. Their Shampoo, Conditioner & Talcum Powder all feature this classic scent as well.

One of our top picks and the first Acqua developed specifically for gents, Intensa turns up the heat on the classic formula adding spicy Bergamot notes on top and Leather and Wood accords underneath.

The Essenza fragrance takes what makes the classic Colonia great and recomposes its notes in high style. Adding more assertive notes like Grapefruit, Clove and Patchouli make Essenza a thoroughly modern and extravagant scent.

The absolute height of luxury, adding Agarwood nectar (Oud), which is twice as valuable as gold, to the Intensa formula. We’re talking serious velvet rope action here.

Bold new interpretation of the original Colonia scent, Club adds some sophistication via Mint and Neroli at the top, slowly settling into a smoky, woody, Musk accord. Pay the dues and join this club ASAP.

A modern adaptation on their classic Italian Colonia, Colonia Pura opens with the typical citrus top layer of Bergamot and Orange, accentuated perfectly by spicy notes of Coriander and balanced harmoniously by the deep, woodsy aroma of Cedarwood for an incredibly sophisticated aroma.

As a tribute to their homeland, Acqua Di Parma developed the Blu Mediterraneo line, a series of fragrances featuring eponymous ingredients and focusing on the personality of a particular region of Italy. A few of our favorites include the Arancia Di Capri (Musk, Orange & Caramel), Bergamotto Di Calabria (Bergamot, Cedarwood & Musk) and Fico Di Amalfi (Fig, Lemon & Grapefruit).
