To be clear, this bowl is not a need. You can make lather in your hand, on your face, or in a thrift store mug. But if you want to add something special to your kit, this bowl is a great addition.
I've used this bowl for about a month. I prefer a vessel for making lather because of its heat retention. Having a lather stay warm through the shave is nice and metal bowls will lose heat faster. That said, if you live in a place that is really cold in the winter, you may want to spend your money on a scuttle to really up the temperature.
The silver-rimmed bowl is great to look at on the counter. I leave it on our small sink and the wife hasn't gotten sick of it yet.
About the shape; the bowl fits well in the palm of my hand, so there's no worry of dropping it when loading the brush. Theres a little protrusion at the bottom of the bowl that may help when swirling your brush to build lather. The lather stays in the bowl more than I expected which is nice.
Overall, I look forward to using this on a daily basis.

Spendy for just a bowl, but I must say it is very durable and looks sharp in the bathroom. Great for mixing my cream with my brush!

I didn't always think a shave bowl was necessary but someone changed my mind. Is good size, fits the shave soap and helps keep my sink area clean.
