A FEW SHINING NOTES ON SUN PROTECTION

It’s a fact. Excess exposure to the sun damages skin, causes dermis to age more rapidly and might also lead to serious illness. And, since that old burning sphere in the sky isn’t going anywhere, the question really comes down to… “What are you gonna’ do about it?”

  • PUT UP A “SCREEN”: No matter the weather outside, men should apply a sunscreen every single day. Doing such in the AM will prevent solar radiation and damaging rays from reaching the skin and also prevent potential burning.

  • WHAT’S THE MAGIC NUMBER? If you’re going to use it (which you should), apply a sun screen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15. Feel free to go higher, but real sun exposure calls for 15 at a minimum.

  • UVA, UVB, RU SERIOUS? We won’t bore you with details of both types of potentially damaging rays (UVA & UVB), but will say that your sun product should offer protection from the duo.

  • WHERE’S THE PROOF? View waterproof and water-resistant sunscreens with a bit of skepticism, regardless of their SPF rating. No matter what the tube says, play it safe post-swim and reapply.

  • TIMING IS EVERYTHING: Ideally, sunscreen should be applied about 30 minutes prior to sun exposure so that it can be absorbed and less likely to wash off.
